The drinking water quality standards describe the parameters set for drinking water. Despite the fact that every human on this planet needs drinking water to survive and that water may contain many harmful constituents, there are no universally recognised and accepted international standards for drinking water. However, there are defined guidelines or targets rather than requirements. Many countries specify parametric values such as colour, turbidity, pH, the taste and odour.
During research, I have found pH level (Keeping it alkaline), TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) and the essential mineral content to be key parameters beside odur, taste and absence of harmful substance and bacteria.
In nature, water flows down mountain streams and picks up alkaline minerals from rocks in the stream. Alkaline water is rich in alkalizing compounds, including calcium, silica, potassium, magnesium, and bicarbonate. Tap water contains different dissolved elements that influence its pH level. Pure water has a pH level close to 7. Alkaline water has a pH above 7. The idea is that to create a more alkaline balance in your body along with the necessary mineral content, you should drink water with a higher pH. the body is capable of using the minerals it needs and storing or discarding any excess. There are filters in the market with upcoming technology to convert water into alkaline water. Artificially alkaline water only neutralises acidity where it has direct contact, like the stomach and small intestine. When consumed daily, the small intestine in particular becomes overly alkaline and side effects begin to appear. Most common could be erratic heart behavior, hypertension, nervousness/anxiety, urinary tract and bladder infections, and stabbing side pains.
In terms of Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), in the U.S., the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) advises against consuming water containing more than 500mg/liter, otherwise known as 500 parts per million (ppm) of TDS, although many health specialists believe that ideal drinking water should be under 50 ppm or lower. The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) fixes the upper limit of TDS in drinking water at 500 ppm. Some of the dissolved minerals in water are useful for human health and therefore very low or zero TDS is also not desirable. When the TDS is reduced severely it also affects the Ph of the water, which BIS specifies should be in the range 6.5-8.5. Water with very low TDS will taste insipid and while there is no official lower limit, TDS of at least 80 ppm is the accepted minimum level.
In a study by the World Health Organization, a panel of tasters recommended TDS of less than 300 to be excellent.
The purified water has zero TDS which is unhealthy and all RO systems need an additional step where minerals or TDS are added back before the water is fit for drinking. Compounding the problem is the fact that the rejected waste water has very high levels of TDS making it unfit for most applications.
Rainwater is naturally distilled water and has extremely low TDS. If you have correctly implemented the rain-water harvesting method in your home, the rainwater that charges your ground water will keep the TDS level in check.Underground water, Borewell or water Tankers
On the other hand, old concept of clay pots not only cools the water down, they also provide healing with the elements of earth. Most significantly, clay pots transfer the chill to the water based on the climate. Another benefit of clay water pots is the alkaline nature of clay. The alkaline clay interacts with the acidity of water and provides the proper pH balance. This water can help curb acidity and in turn provides relief from gastronomic pains. This nature of clay is quite useful and is one of the few well-documented benefits of drinking water from an earthen pot.
Therefore, you choose the filter as per above table and availability and use clay pot to add the benefits of alkaline and cooling properties. That’s how you give your family the water it needs and the best kind available. The RO water available in the next shop may not have the right pH/mineral level needed for your needs. Be careful and carry bottle from your home like older times and take control of water you drink.
